Behavioural Problems

Behavioural problems typically affect those people who have Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), but can also be seen in those people with associated learning difficulties. In many cases, challenging behaviour is caused by an underdeveloped cerebellum. The cerebellum (the skill learning centre) is the part of the brain which is fundamental to the way we learn and perform skills.

If the cerebellum is underdeveloped it makes both learning and performing skills very difficult to do. Those people affected will become increasingly frustrated that they aren’t able to do the tasks that other people find easy.

The reason is, skills are being performed by the cerebrum (the thinking brain) because they haven’t been made fully automatic using the cerebellum. Therefore very often the thinking brain is overloaded and leads to a lack of memory capacity. A lack of memory capacity makes it very hard for people to control and rationalise their thoughts. This has a damaging effect on peoples’ behaviour as they’re unable to manage feelings and emotions: leading to disruptive, challenging behaviour.

The Dore program helps remedy challenging behaviour by stimulating and strengthening the connections needed between the cerebellum and the cerebrum. The progressive exercises develop the cerebellum so that skills and learning abilities become automatic. This significantly boosts the brain’s memory capacity and therefore gives people the ability to rationalise and manage their thoughts, feelings and emotions.
