Spatial Awareness

In many cases poor spatial awareness is seen in those people who are affected by Dyslexia and ADHD. This symptom can cause a number of associated problems. It is common that those affected will show signs of poor sense of direction, which causes problems with peoples’ ability to read road signs and maps. This symptom also affects peoples’ abilities in sport and physical activity and therefore they often show very little interest in it.

People affected by a poor spatial awareness will find sporting activities challenging because the symptom affects their ability to coordinate movement as well as impairs their visual processing skills because they is a lack of working memory capacity, making teams sports particularly difficult.

It is common that those affected by learning and attention difficulties also have an impaired inner ear. In many cases this problem significantly affects peoples’ balance mechanisms and they often compensate by using other muscles in the body to balance.

In many cases that we help, problems with the inner ear are very closely linked to an underdeveloped cerebellum. Through the exercise program we are able to strengthen and develop the connections between the vestibular (inner ear) and the cerebellum. The exercises remedy problems with spatial awareness by releasing capacity in the working memory so that movements can be coordinated and visual processing becomes automatic. By improving spatial awareness people are able to participate in team sports easily and actually begin to find sport very enjoyable.
